Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 Expansion: Routes & Key Updates

Hyderabad is recognized as one of India’s fastest-expanding metropolitan hubs that have seen remarkable urban growth in recent years. Everything About Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: Project Details & Cost

Phase 2 of the metro rail project will expand the network by an additional 63 kilometers, extending service to multiple regions within the city such as Gachibowli, the airport, and many other commercial and residential zones. A new interchange station at Raidurg is also planned, which will provide a connection to the Outer Ring Road and significantly improve access to other parts of the city.

Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) will be responsible for executing the project, with an estimated budget of ₹24,200 crore. The mode of development for this phase is still under consideration. As per reports, it may follow either the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model or the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is implementing various initiatives to make sure that the Phase 2 project is completed on time, and that too without compromising on quality standards. The Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited in collaboration with HMDA will construct an elevated Bus Rapid Transit System that will span 20 kilometers, connecting Kokapet Neopolis to the KPHB colony Metro station.

Project Key Facts and Funding

The Telangana government has given its approval for the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 updates, which will expand the metro network by 76.4 km across five corridors.

This major expansion has been made with an aim to improve urban connectivity and reduce traffic congestion across the city. The project is expected to be completed within four years and will be financed through a combination of state and central government funding, multilateral loans, and public-private partnerships.

The projected cost for the completion of the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 project is anticipated to be Rs 24,269 Crore. This initiative will include a network spanning 76.4 kilometers, covering five primary corridors:

  • Nagole-Shamshabad Airport
  • Raidurg-Kokapet
  • MGBS-Chandrayangutta
  • Miyapur-Patancheru
  • LB Nagar-Hayathnagar

The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership (ppp) model, with active involvement from the state as well as central governments. The flow of the funding and the Hyderabad metro expansion details are as follows:

  • State Government is expected to spend ₹7,313 crore (30%)
  • Central Government is expected to spend ₹4,230 crore (18%)
  • Multilateral Agencies such as JICA, ADB, and NDB are expected to spend ₹11,693 crore (48%), backed by a sovereign guarantee from the central government.
  • Contribution from the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is expected to be ₹1,033 crore (4%)

This mix of financial approaches is designed to make sure effective resource mobilization and successful execution of the project.

Key Corridors Planned Under Metro Phase 2

Corridor 4: Nagole to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport -24 Stations

One of the most important components of Phase 2 Metro is the proposed corridor connecting Nagole to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). Spanning across 36.8 Km, this route will offer seamless, direct metro access to the airport, thus, improving travel convenience for domestic as well as international passengers. This corridor will connect directly from Nagole to Shamshadabad Airport; however, it will integrate at Nagole, LB Nagar, and Chandrayangutta making sure smooth connectivity with the existing metro network.

Corridor 5: Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis – 10 Stations

This 11.6 km corridor, which is part of Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 route map serves as an extension of the Blue Line Metro, stretching from Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis. It passes through key hubs such as the Financial District and Gachibowli, improving connectivity to some of the city’s most important residential and commercial areas.

Corridor 6: MGBS to Chandrayangutta – 6 Stations

This 7.5 km extension of the Green Line Metro runs from Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta. It serves the heavily populated areas of Hyderabad’s Old City. By improving access to reliable public transportation, this corridor aims to ease congestion and significantly improve daily commute options for residents residing in apartments near metro stations in these high-traffic areas. apartments near metro station.

Corridor 7: Miyapur to Patancheru – 10 Stations

This is a 13.4 km extension of the Red Line that will run from Miyapur to Patancheru along the Mumbai Highway. This corridor will strengthen transit connectivity in the western parts of Hyderabad and is thus expected to benefit industrial zones that come along this route. Further, it will also provide improved access to residents residing in apartments near metro station and make daily commutes easier for workers and residents alike.

Corridor 8: LB Nagar to Hayat Nagar – 6 Stations

This is a 7.1 km corridor that extends the Red Line from LB Nagar to Hayat Nagar on the Vijayawada highway. This extension is aimed at improving accessibility to the residents living in nearby areas of LB Nagar and beyond. Further, it will also help ease traffic congestion and improve public transport options in these heavily populated neighborhoods.

Corridor 9: RGIA to Fourth City (Skill University) – 9 Stations

This corridor from RGIA to the Fourth City route, which is part of Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 route map, is set to significantly improve connectivity to the upcoming fourth city region, which is being developed as a major center for educational and skill development. Spanning a total of 40 Km, this corridor will feature nine stations and include a 2 km underground section near the airport, an 18 km road-level metro line, and a 20 km elevated corridor totaling 40 km.

New Stations in the Works for Hyderabad Metro Phase 2

Phase 2 will add 54 new metro stations to the extended routes. Key stops will include the Financial District, Jubilee Hills Check Post, and Shamshabad. Officials haven’t shared the full station list yet.

These stations aim to serve Hyderabad’s growing residential areas, shopping centers, and business parks. They’ll connect the metro network more with the city’s current infrastructure.

Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro looks set to change the city’s public transport in a big way. It plans to offer better connections, cut down on traffic jams, and encourage greener ways to get around the city.

When Will It Be Done? Project Milestones

The Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 should finish by 2028, but this schedule hinges on things like getting land, securing money, and building speed. The project will happen in steps, with some key routes like the Airport Line (Nagole to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport) finishing first.

Based on recent news, some early work for parts of Phase 2 has started. This involves finding spots for stations getting environmental clearance and setting up to grow the current metro lines.
